The Substrate Series: Reading Order, Characters, and What to Expect

The Substrate Series is a sequence of novels about two scientists, a forty-year-old hypothesis, and the question of what happens when the data refuses to cooperate with what you expected it to say.

This post is a reader's guide: reading order, the main characters, the central themes, and what to expect from Books 1 and 2.

Reading Order

Book 1: Wherever It Leads — The series begins here. Dr. Sarah Chen, a mathematical physicist, arrives at the Institute for Theoretical Physics to disprove the life's work of Dr. Leo Alderman. The novel follows what happens when she discovers she cannot.

Book 2: The Instrument — The second novel picks up directly after the events of Wherever It Leads. The consequences of what Sarah and Leo discovered in Book 1 begin to propagate outward — through the Institute, through the scientific community, and through their own lives. The central question of Book 2 is not whether the Substrate Hypothesis is correct, but what it means to live in a world where it might be.

The series is designed to be read in order. Each novel is complete in itself — it has a beginning, a middle, and an end — but the full arc of the story requires both books, and the events of Book 1 are the foundation on which Book 2 is built.

The Main Characters

Dr. Leo Alderman is seventy-three years old at the start of Wherever It Leads. He has spent forty years developing a mathematical framework for the hypothesis that space is emergent from a deeper substrate — a substrate that has, at its deepest level, the properties of attending mind. He is not a mystic. He is a physicist who has followed the evidence to a place that most of his colleagues refuse to follow, and who has had the patience and the rigour to build a mathematical framework for what he found there. He is also a man who lost his wife twenty years ago, and who has been asking, with the full precision of his training, whether the loss is what it appears to be.

Dr. Sarah Chen is forty-one at the start of the novel. She is one of the best mathematical physicists of her generation — precise, rigorous, and deeply sceptical of anything that looks like physics being used to support conclusions that physics cannot support. She has been sent to the Institute by people who are certain that Leo's mathematics contains a flaw. She is there to find it.

Sarah is not a sceptic in the dismissive sense. She is a sceptic in the scientific sense: she follows the evidence, and she follows it honestly, even when it leads somewhere she did not expect. Her willingness to follow the evidence is what makes her dangerous to the people who sent her, and what makes her the right person to be in the room with Leo.

Sarah's mother was critically ill when Sarah was eleven. Sarah sat in her mother's hospital room and felt something she has never been able to fully describe. She has spent the next thirty years building the mathematics that might tell her whether what she felt was real.

The Central Themes

The cost of honesty. Both Leo and Sarah are people who follow the evidence past the point where most people stop. The novel is about what that costs — professionally, personally, and in terms of what you are left holding when the evidence leads somewhere that the institutions around you are not prepared to go.

The relationship between grief and physics. The questions that grief raises — whether the people we have lost are somewhere or nowhere, whether the universe is the kind of place that could contain what we most need it to contain — are not just emotional questions. They are, the novel argues, questions that the current state of physics has not closed. The novel takes this seriously without offering comfort.

The boundary between science and speculation. The Substrate Hypothesis sits at the edge of what current physics can test. The novel is careful about where that edge is — about what is established, what is genuinely open, and what is speculation. Leo's hypothesis is speculative. The questions it is built on are not.

What to Expect

The Substrate Series is literary science fiction. The physics is real — the quantum mechanics, the foundations of physics, the open questions about the measurement problem and the emergence of space are all drawn from the actual literature. The hypothesis is fictional, but it is built on real open questions in a way that is intended to be honest about where the fiction begins.

The novels are not action-driven. They are character-driven stories about people thinking carefully about hard questions, and about what happens to those people when the thinking leads somewhere unexpected. They are slow in the way that good science is slow: patient, precise, and unwilling to reach conclusions before the evidence supports them.
